The Sathyamangalam police in Erode district arrested M Murugesan, a 28-year-old from Anthiyur, on Monday for stealing a truck from outside the Bannari Amman Sugars Limited in Sathyamangalam.
On Saturday night, N Subramani, a 45-year-old truck driver from Gobichettipalayam, had parked his truck outside the sugar mill after unloading sugarcanes. After returning home, Subramani was informed by a worker at the mill at around 5 am on Sunday that an unknown person had stolen the truck and was heading towards Annur.
Upon learning this, Subramani contacted the truck owner, M Chennimalai, a 59-year-old resident of Anthiyur, and filed a complaint with the Sathyamangalam police. The police began their investigation immediately.
In the early hours of Monday, the police received information that the stolen truck was being driven back towards Sathyamangalam via Puliampatty. A joint operation by the Sathyamangalam and Puliampatty police stations led to the truck being intercepted at the Taanapudur check post.
After questioning the driver, the police learned that Murugesan had stolen the truck while under the influence of alcohol. He confessed to the crime and was subsequently arrested. Murugesan has been remanded in judicial custody, and further investigation is ongoing.
