NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A 28-year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening after officers discovered he was driving a stolen vehicle and in possession of a stolen firearm, according to the North Charleston Police Department.
Louis Cooper faces charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and two counts of receiving stolen goods under $2,000, jail records show.
The arrest came after a city asset camera detected the stolen vehicle near Dorchester Road and Admiral Drive around 6 p.m. An alert from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) identified the car as linked to an armed and dangerous suspect.
Officers located the vehicle in a parking lot on the 4400 block of Dorchester Road. When police activated their lights, the front-seat passenger fled toward a nearby Food Lion, while the driver, Cooper, remained in the car and complied with law enforcement.
The fleeing passenger was later caught on Spur Street, where officers reportedly recovered a substance believed to be marijuana and a stolen gun linked to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police also confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen from the same jurisdiction.
Cooper was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center and remains in custody.
