Kendrell Averett Charged for Firearm Incident at Lawton Freedom Festival

19-year-old faces felony for firearm possession and stolen property

LAWTON, Okla — Kendrell Depaul Averett, 19, faces multiple felony charges following an incident at Lawton’s Freedom Festival on June 28. Averett is charged with possession of a firearm after a previous felony conviction, possession of stolen property, and driving under the influence while under 21.

Lawton police reported responding to a disturbance involving several juveniles during the festival at Elmer Thomas Park. Witnesses and officers heard possible gunshots or fireworks from a south parking area and saw a male running while concealing a handgun in his waistband.

The suspect, identified as Averett, was safely apprehended later, and police recovered a stolen handgun during his arrest. He was released from Comanche County jail after posting $26,000 in bond.
