In a major breakthrough, the Davangere police in Karnataka have arrested Madhu, a shopkeeper from Machahalli village in Mandya district, who is accused of defrauding eight young women on a popular Kannada matrimonial platform. The accused, who had been evading arrest since 2019, was apprehended recently and is now in judicial custody.
Madhu’s scam involved contacting women through the Kannada matrimonial platform under the pretense of offering them job opportunities. Once the women engaged with him, he would proceed to extort money, claiming various fake charges or processing fees for the jobs he had promised.
In one instance, Madhu allegedly swindled Rs 21 lakh from a woman in Davangere. The total amount defrauded across the eight cases amounts to Rs 62.83 lakh, according to the police. Madhu’s fraudulent activities were spread across multiple cities in Karnataka, including Harihara, Mandya, Chikkamagaluru, and Bangalore, where similar complaints were registered.
