MIAMI, FL — A grieving South Florida father was arrested Tuesday after allegedly violating a domestic injunction by contacting family members following the tragic death of his 17-year-old son.
Jon Ferrell was taken into custody after reportedly reaching out to his children, despite a court-ordered injunction involving his wife, according to his legal team at Podhurst Orseck. The injunction was already in place before his son’s murder.
Ferrell’s son, Dominic Ferrell, was fatally stabbed in an unprovoked attack on June 8 at the Icon Brickell high-rise in downtown Miami. The suspect, 26-year-old Kyrill Kehl, allegedly entered the building without a key fob and randomly targeted the teen’s apartment. Police confirmed that the two did not know each other.
In a statement issued through his attorneys, Ferrell denied the charges and said he’s being unfairly targeted during a time of immense grief.
“I lost my son, my best friend, and I relive it every night. I’m living a nightmare that keeps getting worse. These charges are absurd and unjust,” Ferrell stated. “All I want is to grieve and be a father to my children without being dragged through baseless accusations.”
Ferrell’s attorney, Matt Weinshall, called the arrest “unjust and unfounded,” claiming that the allegations were designed to harm Ferrell’s reputation and add to his suffering.
“These claims have been orchestrated to damage his reputation, adding further hardship to an already unimaginable period in his life,” Weinshall said.
Dominic, remembered for his kindness and athleticism, had lived in Miami for four years. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School and most recently Miami Beach Senior High School.
Dominic’s mother is expected to speak out publicly on Monday, as her legal team prepares to take action over alleged security failures at the high-rise where the incident occurred.
