In a significant breakthrough, the Kasauli police arrested local resident Jitender Kumar Chandel for allegedly extorting over Rs1 crore from the chairman of a Delhi-based company, Giverney Inovex Private Limited. Chandel, aged 45, used fake letters bearing the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) letterhead to scam the company.
The fraudulent activities came to light in March when the company’s representatives, Aman Mehta and Kashmiri Lal, lodged a complaint with Kasauli police, claiming that they were extorted by an individual who posed as a government official from the PMO. Upon investigation, it was found that Chandel, who worked for a firm handling PMO contracts, fabricated fake letters and falsely claimed to have official ties with the PMO.
The police probe revealed that Chandel had used the fake letters to intimidate the victims and demand large sums of money. Further scrutiny of his personal devices uncovered that Chandel had also impersonated a Deputy Commissioner of the Income Tax Department, sending emails and correspondence to multiple departments and banks under false pretenses.
Chandel was arrested and presented before a local court, which remanded him to two-day police custody. A case has been filed against him under multiple sections of the IPC, including cheating, forgery, and impersonation. Investigations continue to uncover any further illegal activities linked to Chandel’s fraudulent operations.
