NORFOLK, Neb. – Just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Norfolk Police responded to a theft in progress on the 700 block of South 12th Street.

The reporting party told officers he saw a suspect dressed in black fleeing his pickup truck. Stolen items included a checkbook, camper keys, and other personal property. Additional property belonging to a family member was later found missing from a separate vehicle.

During the search, officers located a backpack containing some of the stolen items near the southwest corner of a business on the 1100 block of West Pasewalk Avenue. More property was recovered behind a nearby residence on the 1200 block of West Pasewalk Avenue.

While searching the residence with consent from the occupants, officers encountered 19-year-old Jett Bear of Norfolk, who appeared intoxicated. Bear attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a brief pursuit and struggled with officers while being handcuffed. During the arrest, Bear spat on one of the officers.

Officers recovered the victim’s checkbook from Bear’s bedroom, along with suspected drug paraphernalia and marijuana. Bear was arrested for obstruction of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and assaulting a public safety officer with bodily fluids. He was also cited for theft, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bear was initially housed in Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to Madison County Jail.
