Jeremiah Mukyemu, Intern Doctor, Arrested for Matooke Theft

Residents of Nsawo Zone Catch and Detain Suspect in Namugongo

WAKISO, UGANDA – Residents of Nsawo Zone apprehended Jeremiah Mukyemu, an intern doctor at Mulago National Referral Hospital, in the early hours of the morning for allegedly stealing a bunch of matooke worth UGX 30,000 from a stall along Namugongo-Seeta Highway.

Residents Catch the Suspect in the Act
The stolen matooke belonged to Justine Tumukunde, a local vendor. John Mukasa, a witness near the stall, said he heard suspicious noises and, upon checking, saw two men breaking into the stall. Mukasa raised the alarm, prompting a chase in which one suspect, Mukyemu, was caught, while his accomplice managed to escape.

Police Detain the Suspect
Mukyemu was handed over to Namugongo Anglican Police Post, where he is currently being held on theft charges under SDREF08/10/2024. Authorities are searching for his accomplice.

Local Leaders Condemn Rising Theft Cases
Area Chairperson Michael Ssendawula confirmed the suspect’s identity as a medical doctor affiliated with Total Care Medical Clinic and an intern at Mulago Hospital. He expressed concern over increasing theft cases in the area, urging authorities to improve security measures.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest, revealing that Mukyemu was found in possession of a Makerere University College of Health Sciences student ID.

Authorities continue their investigation while residents call for enhanced night patrols to curb rising theft incidents.
