NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — Two people have been charged in connection with a gambling scam in North Charleston that allegedly cost a man over $21,000.
James Darr, 25, and Valva Kennedy, 51, are facing swindling charges after police say they orchestrated a fake bingo-style game near a gas station on Ashley Phosphate Road. The incident occurred on January 26 under the guise of a “customer appreciation” event.
According to police, the victim was initially told he could win up to $250 with a $20 buy-in after receiving three free plays. Over time, the stakes increased dramatically, with buy-ins rising to $1,280 and promises of a $35,000 jackpot. Investigators say the victim felt pressured to keep playing, thinking a win was imminent—but instead, he lost a total of $21,000.
After further investigation, police arrested Darr on July 1 and Kennedy on July 23. Both suspects are now facing charges of swindling in connection with the scheme.
