Man Claimed Property Was “Free” During Theft

by Sophia Bennett

MUNCIE, IN — A Muncie man, James Michael Cane, 45, was charged on Nov. 12 with burglary and theft after allegedly stealing items from a North Reserve Street home. Cane faces a Level 4 felony for burglary, punishable by up to 12 years, and a Level 6 felony for theft, carrying a maximum 30-month sentence.

Police said Cane was arrested Nov. 4 after surveillance cameras captured him attempting to break into the home while the owner was away. According to court documents, Cane told officers he believed the items were free because of a “free” sign he saw the day before.

Officers recovered numerous items from Cane’s Dodge Durango, including an air conditioner, carbon monoxide alarm, coveralls, and a set of door knobs with keys, all identified by the homeowner. Video footage allegedly showed Cane entering the residence to take the items.

Cane remains held in the Delaware County Jail on a $12,500 bond. Court records show a history of convictions, including driving without a license in June, burglary in 1999, false reporting, and resisting law enforcement.
