Jaipur Police arrested Seema Agarwal, a woman accused of extorting large sums of money from wealthy men after marrying them, in a dramatic bust in Uttarakhand on Sunday. The arrest followed a complaint by a well-known jeweler from Jaipur, who reported that Agarwal had extorted Rs1.21 crore from three victims over the years.
The accused, identified as Seema Agarwal from Dehradun, allegedly used matrimonial sites to target wealthy businessmen and widowers. In one instance, Agarwal married a prominent jeweler from Jaipur in February 2023 after meeting him through a matrimonial website. Shortly after the marriage, she absconded with jewelry worth Rs30 lakh and Rs6.5 lakh in cash, and later filed a case accusing her husband and his family of unnatural sex and rape.
A detailed investigation, led by DCP (West) Amit Kumar, revealed that this was not her first act of fraud. The woman had previously extorted a businessman from Agra in 2013, after marrying his son and later filing a false case of torture. She reportedly extorted Rs75 lakh from the businessman. In 2017, she did the same to a software engineer from Gurugram, filing a case of rape against him and his cousin.
On July 29, 2023, the jeweler from Jaipur lodged a case against Seema Agarwal, prompting the police to launch an investigation. A special police team was formed and sent to Uttarakhand, where the woman was traced and arrested.
In a shocking revelation, the woman’s modus operandi involved marrying men through matrimonial apps, particularly targeting those with significant wealth, and then fabricating serious criminal charges against them and their families to extort money.
