Indore police have arrested Priyanshu (18), a graphic designer, and his NEET-aspirant girlfriend Anjana for stealing jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh from Shri Jewellers in the posh Silicon City area of Rau, Madhya Pradesh. Authorities recovered all the stolen items from the couple.
According to police, the duo was inspired by the Bollywood film Bunty Aur Babli and planned the theft after Priyanshu lost his job at TCS due to AI-driven changes, leaving them under financial stress.
DCP Krishan Lalchandani stated that Priyanshu and Anjana, who have known each other since Class 6, conducted a week-long reconnaissance of the shop. They even purchased small items to familiarize themselves with the layout and routines.
For surveillance, they used a scooter borrowed from a couple they were staying with. Police traced the scooter to Mandla, which led them to the accused.
The couple attempted to sell the stolen jewellery at Sarafa Bazaar, but traders refused due to their age. Failing to dispose of the items, they left for Mandla to celebrate Christmas. Mobile location tracking helped police intercept and arrest them at Bhopal railway station.
The DCP confirmed that 100% of the stolen jewellery was recovered, marking a successful closure to the case.
