On the night of December 24, police in Guwahati’s Maligaon area arrested a man, Jayanta Deka, in connection with a theft. A team from Pan Bazaar Police Station apprehended Deka near Rail Gates No. 2 and 3, where they found him in possession of stolen goods. Among the items recovered were Rs. 1.11 lakh in cash, two gold coins weighing 12 grams, and a mobile phone.

During interrogation, Deka admitted to stealing the items and directed the police to a location near Ushamati, close to Gate No. 3, where additional stolen gold was hidden. Acting on this information, the police conducted a recovery operation and successfully seized four pairs of gold earrings, a gold ear top, and other valuables.

The police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts to determine the full scope of the theft and identify other possible victims.

In a separate operation earlier this month, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam arrested three individuals in connection with possessing fake gold. The suspects—Jeherul Islam (26), Rupam Das (24), and Jitendra Maurya (28)—were arrested during a raid at ISBT, under the jurisdiction of Garchuk Police Station, on December 13, 2024. The STF recovered 742.2 grams of fake gold, along with Rs. 1.31 lakh in cash and three mobile phones.

Both cases highlight the ongoing efforts of Guwahati and Assam police to combat theft and fraud in the region.
