In a major breakthrough, goldsmith Uttam Gorai was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stealing raw gold worth Rs 2.6 crore from a jeweller in Muchipara, Kolkata, four months ago.
Uttam and his brother, Goutam Gorai, were entrusted in June to craft ornaments from 2.3 kg of raw gold. Along with the gold, the jeweller had provided them with several lakhs of rupees as advance making charges for the ornaments.
Police stated that the duo was supposed to deliver the finished products within weeks but instead fled with the gold and cash. The jeweller lodged a complaint, prompting an investigation. Goutam Gorai was arrested a few weeks ago, while Uttam had earlier appealed for anticipatory bail, which was rejected.
Uttam was produced before Bankshall Court, which remanded him in police custody until October 20. Authorities continue their probe into the case.
