Jayanagar police on Monday arrested a 40-year-old goldsmith for allegedly cheating a Bengaluru-based jeweller of 8.3 kg of gold bullion entrusted to him for designing ornaments in April this year.
Based on a formal complaint, police tracked the accused, identified as Manish Kumar Soni, to Goa, where he was vacationing with his wife. Acting swiftly on intelligence inputs, the police apprehended him just as he was preparing to flee.
During subsequent searches, officers recovered 3.1 kg of gold valuables from Soni’s residence in Hanumanthnagar. In addition, Rs8.5 lakh in cash was seized from the house of one of his associates.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to trace the remaining gold and identify whether others were involved in the alleged fraud.
