Pune police have successfully apprehended Amritjit Vinodkumar Sharma, a fugitive army jawan accused of stealing jewelry worth Rs13 lakhs from the home of a constable. Sharma, who had deserted the army before completing his service, was arrested in Satara following a detailed investigation.
The theft took place at the residence of a constable in the Wanawadi area of Pune. The constable’s wife was away when Sharma broke into their house and stole 21 tolas of gold jewelry, which he later sold in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. Upon discovering the theft, the constable promptly reported it to the police, leading to a thorough investigation.
Wanawadi police launched a comprehensive effort, reviewing CCTV footage from over 50 locations and tracking Sharma’s movements across multiple states. He was eventually apprehended in Satara while traveling by bus. The police recovered 16 tolas of gold jewelry from him, which accounted for a significant portion of the stolen items.
Sharma’s gambling addiction, particularly online gambling, is believed to have driven him to commit the crime in an attempt to recover his financial losses. The police are now investigating whether Sharma was involved in other similar criminal activities.
The military community has expressed concern over the incident, with the Southern Command of the Indian Army praising the police for their swift and effective action. This case highlights the need for heightened vigilance within military circles and the importance of strong cooperation between law enforcement agencies in handling such incidents.
