FERNLEY, Nev. — Fernley City Councilman Stan Lau, 64, was taken into custody Monday afternoon following an altercation with a construction worker, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 3 p.m. to a fight reported near Shadow Lane and US 50 Alternate. Upon arrival, they spoke with a construction crew who said Lau had approached one of their workers upset about traffic controls. During the confrontation, Lau reportedly grabbed the worker’s sunglasses and threw them to the ground. When the worker bent down to retrieve the glasses, Lau allegedly punched him in the face.

Deputies noted that no physical evidence of the punch was found. However, investigators established probable cause and placed Lau under a citizen’s arrest.

Lau was booked into Lyon County Jail and faces charges including battery and injury to property.
