TEMPE, Ariz. — Demetrius Domonique Mitchell, a former Tempe police officer, was arrested following allegations he submitted paid requests for nearly 300 hours of overtime he did not work, netting over $24,000 in unearned wages and benefits.
Mitchell, who served with the Tempe Police Department for approximately four years before resigning on July 8, allegedly falsified overtime claims dating back two years, according to investigators.
The discrepancy was uncovered by a Tempe Police supervisor who reviewed multiple records, including body-worn camera footage, activity reports, phone logs, GPS data, and call sheets. These records showed no evidence of Mitchell working during the reported overtime hours.
Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy emphasized the importance of integrity, stating, “When there is sufficient evidence that an officer has violated the law and broken public trust, we will make an arrest and hold them accountable.”
Chief McCoy added, “This is about transparency, integrity, and maintaining the trust of those we serve.”
