A 39-year-old domestic help, P Shanti, from Ragigudda, was arrested for stealing gold ornaments worth Rs 14 lakh from her employer’s house in JP Nagar II Phase. Shanti confessed to the theft, stating that she needed the money to repay loans taken for her daughter’s wedding.
Police recovered 143 grams of gold, including a necklace, four bangles, and two gold coins. Shanti revealed that she had borrowed Rs 6 lakh for the wedding and managed to repay Rs 1 lakh, but struggled to clear the remaining Rs 5 lakh. She lives with her husband Putta, a daily wage worker.
The theft came to light in late May when the employer, school teacher Ayesha Siddiqua, found the gold missing from a locked cupboard. Suspecting an insider, Siddiqua filed a complaint naming Shanti. Police investigation confirmed that Shanti knew the cupboard’s key location and had sold the gold to three different jewelry shops. The ornaments were later recovered by the police.
