PHOENIX — A Phoenix man has been arrested in connection with a theft spree targeting golf equipment stores across the Valley, with losses totaling nearly $12,000, according to Glendale police.
31-year-old Connor Burgess faces multiple felony charges, including organized retail theft, tampering with evidence, and possession of narcotic drugs. He was taken into custody on Nov. 25 at a Phoenix motel after a month-long investigation.
Detectives began investigating after noticing a pattern of thefts at PGA Tour Superstore and Dick’s Sporting Goods locations. In each case, a suspect walked into the stores, picked up high-end golf clubs, and left without paying.
The case broke open when investigators discovered brand-new golf clubs listed on OfferUp at suspiciously low prices. Detectives compared surveillance footage with the profile photo and determined that Burgess was selling the stolen merchandise online.
Several major thefts were linked to Burgess, including:
Oct. 10: Six Ping drivers stolen from PGA Tour Superstore — loss of $3,719.94
Oct. 14: Six more Ping drivers and a TaylorMade club stolen — loss of $4,049.93
Oct. 27: Approximately $4,200 worth of golf equipment stolen from Dick’s Sporting Goods
Witnesses reported that Burgess ignored staff and walked straight to the golf section during each incident.
On Nov. 25, detectives tracked Burgess to a Travel Lodge in Phoenix. Police confirmed his identity through conversation and matching tattoos. Officers also alleged that Burgess possessed illegal narcotics and even attempted to sell drugs to an undercover detective.
Court documents revealed Burgess has an extensive criminal history involving assault, burglary, theft, and drug possession. He was already on probation, which he violated through the new charges.
