Washington Township trustee faces theft, misconduct charges

by Sophia Bennett

GREENSBURG, Ind. — Christian Rust, 36, former Washington Township Trustee in Decatur County, has been charged with theft and official misconduct following an investigation by the Indiana State Police Special Investigations Division.

The probe began in October 2023, focusing on allegations that Rust stole more than $29,000 in public funds during his tenure. Investigators also looked into claims that he removed government files from official computers.

After reviewing the findings, the Decatur County Prosecutor’s Office filed one count of theft and three counts of official misconduct against Rust. A warrant was issued, and Rust voluntarily turned himself in to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

Authorities emphasized that all charges are allegations, and Rust is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about public integrity and misuse of government resources in Indiana’s local offices.
