Chennai Police Arrest NCB Officers Over Methamphetamine Trafficking

Two NCB policemen detained over drug smuggling and raid tip-offs

by Ananya Mehta

Following the arrest of two city policemen involved in drug smuggling, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) has detained another officer from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for questioning regarding methamphetamine trafficking in Chennai. Earlier, a different NCB officer had also been detained for similar inquiries.

The ANIU had previously arrested James (35) from the T. Nagar Deputy Commissioner’s office and R. Barani (32) from the Ayanavaram police station for their alleged involvement in smuggling. Investigators suspect that the two detained NCB officers were complicit in working with drug trafficking gangs by providing them with sensitive information about upcoming raids.

“Based on our investigation, the NCB officers appear to have tipped off smugglers about raids in exchange for high-value drugs. These drugs were then distributed to small-time peddlers in the city, allowing them to earn quick profits. We are currently gathering the necessary evidence to proceed with arrests,” an officer stated.

The ongoing investigation is based on information provided by arrested drug smuggler Surendranath and others associated with the case.
