Tiruchengode rural police have arrested two men, V Matheswaran (38) of Marappanayakkampatti in Salem district and P Harish (27) of Akkalampatty in Namakkal district, on charges of burglary at a businessman’s farmhouse. The police recovered two sovereigns of gold coins, Rs 1.38 lakh in cash, and a scooter from the suspects.

The victim, 72-year-old businessman S Ranganathan of Delhikarar Thottam in Mottayampalayam, owns a five-acre property and a farmhouse in Pirithi village. Ranganathan was away in Delhi since August 7, managing his business.

On August 10, a neighbor noticed the main door of Ranganathan’s farmhouse was broken open and informed his daughter Jyoti, who resides in Chennimalai near Erode. Upon inspection, Jyoti discovered two sovereigns of gold coins and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash were missing from an almirah. She immediately filed a complaint with Tiruchengode rural police.

During a patrol in the Kumaramangalam area on Wednesday evening, police stopped two men riding a scooter and questioned them. This led to the arrest of Matheswaran and Harish, and recovery of the stolen gold and cash.

The investigation is ongoing as police work to uncover if the suspects are involved in further criminal activities.
