The District Transport Officer (DTO) of Bongaigaon, Assam, Deepak Patowary, was arrested on charges of issuing fraudulent vehicle permits and registration documents. His arrest follows an ongoing investigation into over 400 cases of fake vehicle registrations.
According to authorities, Patowary’s residences in Guwahati were raided as part of the investigation, leading to his detention. It is believed that the fraudulent activities occurred during Patowary’s tenure as DTO in Chirang, where he allegedly conspired with a dealing assistant to approve vehicle permits using falsified documents.
Sources say that substantial financial transactions were involved in the issuance of these fake registrations, and the authorities are now probing the possibility of stolen vehicles being implicated in the scam. Investigations are underway, and police are examining the full extent of the fraudulent operations, with more arrests potentially forthcoming.
