A 30-year-old man, Biranchi Naik from Kunja village under Khamar police limits, has been arrested for allegedly swindling Rs 24,000 by impersonating an IPS officer and promising a false job.

Naik, who is unemployed, reportedly used fake police uniforms and ID cards to deceive victims. Last month, he took Rs 24,000 in two installments from Mantu Sahu, a contractor, by promising him a job at Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Talcher.

After Naik failed to deliver the job or refund the money, Sahu lodged an FIR at the Sadar police station on Sunday. Acting on the complaint, police arrested Naik from his rented house at Panchmahala on Monday. During questioning, Naik admitted to taking money from Sahu. Authorities seized police uniforms and Rs 50,000 from him.

“He has been arrested and will be produced in court today,” said Mrinalo Kalo, Sadar police station IIC.
