Six months after the mysterious death of a young dermatologist in Bengaluru, police have arrested her husband, a surgeon, for allegedly murdering her using a high dose of anaesthetic.

Dr. Mahendra Reddy G S, 31, a surgeon at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, was taken into custody following an investigation into the April 24 death of his wife, Dr. Kruthika M Reddy, 29. The couple had married less than a year ago, on May 26, 2024.

Kruthika was brought to Cauvery Hospital on the night of April 24 in an unresponsive state and was declared dead shortly after. At the time, both her family and doctors believed it to be a natural death. However, her elder sister, Dr. Nikitha M Reddy, a radiologist, felt something was amiss.

Driven by suspicion, Nikitha pushed for a thorough investigation. Her insistence led the hospital to file a Medico Legal Case (MLC) report, which was sent to the Marathahalli police. A case of unnatural death was registered, triggering an in-depth probe.

The investigation, supported by forensic evidence and post-mortem reports, later revealed that Kruthika may have been administered a fatal dose of anaesthetic—leading to her untimely death. Police subsequently arrested Mahendra Reddy and are now pursuing charges of murder.

The case has shocked the medical community in Bengaluru, with many calling for a stricter review of intra-professional conduct and access to restricted drugs.
