What began as ragpicking on Bengaluru streets turned into a 22-year crime career for Balaji alias Khadeema Prakash (43). The resident of Yadavanahalli near Attibele has been arrested by Madiwala Police for committing 133 house thefts, recovering stolen items worth over Rs75 lakh, including 779 grams of gold, 100 grams of silver, and two two-wheelers.
Balaji targeted houses listed for sale. Disguised as a buyer, he would earn the homeowner’s trust, sneak pictures of keys, and return months later to break in using duplicate keys. He often chose homes based on visible women’s footwear—assuming more gold ornaments would be present.
To avoid suspicion, he wore delivery company uniforms, posing as an e-commerce courier while committing thefts. He also avoided using a mobile phone but police tracked him through his wife and associates.
The police also arrested Rajendra alias Rajiv Gandhi, a tailor and Balaji’s long-time fence who bought the stolen gold and silver. Rajendra resides in Govindashetty Palya.
Officers revealed that Balaji’s addiction to alcohol, drugs, and betting fueled his relentless spree. Despite being arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) last year, he resumed thefts at 13 more homes after his release.
He operated across several Bengaluru localities including Madiwala, HSR Layout, Bandepalya, MICO Layout, and Hulimavu.
