Delhi Police have arrested Ashish Bachchas, a 26-year-old from East Delhi’s Shakarpur, after he fatally ran over two men near Talkatora Stadium early Sunday morning in a speeding Thar SUV, later found stashed with an assortment of illegal drugs and cash.
Police recovered commercial quantities of cocaine (0.30 gm), LSD (2.6 gm), MDMA (23.47 gm), cannabis (21.26 gm), charas (4.17 gm), along with Rs 25,000 in cash, tobacco, a mobile phone, and an empty liquor bottle from the vehicle. Bachchas, described as a drug user and supplier, was confirmed to be driving under the influence.
The crash, which occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, left two pedestrians critically injured. One of them, Sujesh Kshetri from Sikkim, was declared dead upon arrival at AIIMS Trauma Centre, while the second victim succumbed to injuries later in the day.
DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla stated that a passerby alerted police, leading to the arrest of the accused at the scene. The SUV had also crashed into a pole, crumpling its front end.
Initial investigations indicate Bachchas had celebrated Raksha Bandhan with his family before heading to Gurugram on Saturday night. The fatal accident happened during his return.
Police also found that the vehicle had an unpaid speeding fine from August 1, amounting to Rs 2,000.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Chanakyapuri Police Station. Authorities are now working to trace the source of the narcotics and reconstruct the full chain of events.
