Menlo Park, CA – Police in Menlo Park have arrested a San Jose man accused of scamming $35,000 from a 77-year-old resident in a scheme authorities say may have international ties.
The scam reportedly began on February 13, when the elderly victim received a text claiming to be from a major online retailer and a federal agency. The message threatened prison time unless the victim complied with instructions to hand over cash to a courier.
The victim withdrew a total of $35,000 from several banks on February 11 and 12. On the 12th, the suspect allegedly arrived at the victim’s home and collected a box containing the cash.
Investigators identified the suspect as 22-year-old Arya Mehta of San Jose. He was arrested at his residence and booked into San Mateo County Jail on multiple charges, including theft by false pretenses, access card fraud, and elder abuse.
“This arrest reflects our dedication to protecting vulnerable residents from predatory scams,” said Detective Eddie Mazon of the Menlo Park Police Department.
Authorities are continuing the investigation and believe more individuals may be involved. The case is suspected to be part of a wider fraud ring with potential international connections.
