CHELMSFORD, MA — A Lowell man is facing criminal charges after allegedly robbing a grocery store in Chelmsford and then hiding in a pile of leaves to evade capture.

Chelmsford police responded to an unarmed robbery at the Market Basket on Chelmsford Street on Saturday. Store employees reported that a man had stolen an undisclosed amount of money from a cashier and fled the scene on foot, crossing Route 3.

After a brief search, officers located the suspect — Arthur Bettencourt, 59 — hiding in a pile of leaves nearby. He was taken into custody and charged with unarmed robbery and two counts of assault and battery.

Bettencourt is scheduled to be arraigned in Lowell District Court on Monday.
