ORLANDO, Fla. — A 19-year-old mother was arrested after her one-week-old infant was found alone in a driveway in Orlando.
The Orlando Police Department reported that Angelica Sanchez Bautista was arrested on Friday by the Fugitive Investigative Unit. She is currently being held in ICE custody.
The infant was discovered in the driveway of a residence on the 5500 block of Lido Street. Authorities say the baby was in good condition and is expected to recover fully after treatment at a nearby hospital.
Police noted that the infant’s father was unaware of Bautista’s actions. Legal experts have discussed potential outcomes if Bautista is deported, given the infant was born in the U.S. and is therefore a U.S. citizen.
“Her baby was born in the United States and is a U.S. citizen,” said criminal defense attorney David Haas. “She may have the choice to take her baby with her, but current policies under the Trump administration add complexity to such cases.”
Witnesses reported the baby’s discovery after one neighbor’s roommate spotted the infant while taking out the trash, with another neighbor seeing the situation unfold.
