Adarius Hayes, a 20-year-old linebacker for the University of Miami Hurricanes, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury in connection with a deadly crash in Largo, Florida, in May.

According to Largo Police, Hayes turned himself in on Friday and was booked into the Pinellas County Jail before posting a $350,000 bond and being released later that day.

The crash occurred on May 10 at the intersection of Ridge Road and Orange View Drive when Hayes, driving a Dodge Durango, was reportedly speeding and weaving through traffic at nearly 80 mph in a 40 mph zone. Police say Hayes made dangerous lane changes crossing multiple lanes without signaling before colliding with a Kia Soul.

Three people in the Kia Soul—10-year-old Jabari Solomon, 4-year-old Charlie Solomon Rivera, and 78-year-old Gail Price—died as a result of the crash. Herbert Rivera, 58, who sustained serious injuries and was a passenger in the Kia, survived and is recovering.

Police and investigators used vehicle data recorders, surveillance footage, and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the collision. Hayes has prior traffic violations including speeding and careless driving earlier in 2023.

Largo Police Chief Mike Loux called the charges “very serious” given the loss of three innocent lives. The investigation remains ongoing.
