In a significant development, Begur police have arrested Murthy K, a 27-year-old BCA graduate, for committing at least 16 thefts across the city since 2023. Murthy, a resident of Hongasandra, was apprehended while investigating a theft case at a house in Lakshmi Layout, Garvebhavipalya.
With Murthy’s arrest, police have successfully solved six thefts within Begur police limits and two more in Suryanagar police limits. The investigation also led to the recovery of 261 grams of gold ornaments, valued at approximately Rs 18.5 lakh. Murthy had previously been arrested in connection with eight other theft cases.
According to the police, one of Murthy’s recent crimes occurred on December 20, when he stole gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 15,000 in cash from the house of Mahesh BN, a private firm employee. Mahesh’s wife had locked the house around 1 pm before leaving for a friend’s house with their children. His parents were also away. She had placed the house key in the shoe rack before stepping out, and upon returning around 3 pm, she found that an unknown thief had entered and stolen the valuables.
The police investigation and Murthy’s arrest have shed light on a series of thefts committed by the graduate, showcasing the disturbing turn of events from a former student to a career thief.
