SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCSC) – Richard Dezmond Maybank, 28, of Moncks Corner, has been arrested on charges of attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools after attempting to break into an occupied residence.

At approximately 9 a.m. on the morning of the incident, Summerville police responded to reports of a man attempting to break into a home on Southport Drive. The homeowner and her child managed to escape and seek refuge at a nearby neighbor’s house.

However, Maybank then turned to the neighbor’s home and tried to force his way inside. Armed with a burglary tool, he was confronted by the neighbor, who was holding a handgun for protection. Fearing for their safety, the homeowner shot Maybank.

The suspect fled on foot but was apprehended by police just minutes later on Delafield Drive. Maybank was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Both the homeowner and the neighbor were unharmed. The homeowner who shot Maybank will not face criminal charges, according to Captain Ken Driscoll. Maybank remains in custody at the Berkeley County Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing.
