In a dramatic turn of events, Gavin Rozario, a 35-year-old man from Thane, managed to catch one of the four robbers attempting to steal gold jewellery from Darshan Jewellers. The incident took place when the robbers, wearing helmets, stormed into the shop on the pretext of a robbery. CCTV footage from the store captured the entire sequence of events.
According to police reports, one of the robbers brandished a pistol and threatened the jeweller, while the other three began looting the gold jewellery. However, the shopkeeper fought back, using a stick to chase the robbers away. Three robbers fled, but Manoj Kumar, the last suspect, was caught by Gavin Rozario, who was in the area at the time.
Rozario was on his way to a meeting in Kalwa when he noticed the robbers running out of the shop. “I had stopped to make a phone call near the shop when I saw four people, wearing helmets, running out. I immediately got out of my car and chased the last man. Being 6.2 feet tall, it was easy to grab him by the collar,” Rozario said. Passersby also assisted in catching the suspect, and the group handed him over to the police.
The arrested suspect, identified as Manoj Kumar, was injured during the chase and was treated at a local hospital. Police have booked him under sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted robbery. However, Kumar is reportedly not cooperating with the investigation.
The police also confirmed that the accused are from outside Maharashtra and had been residing in Kalwa for the past month. Investigators have secured CCTV footage from the area and are working to track the whereabouts of the remaining three robbers.
Senior Police Inspector S Pol from Kapurbawdi Police Station praised the swift action of the jewellery shopkeeper and Rozario. “The prompt response by the shop worker forced the accused to flee. We are now using the CCTV footage to track the other suspects and have set up a separate team for further investigation,” he said.
