ODESSA, Texas — A man is in custody after police say a shoplifting incident at a Walmart escalated into a robbery involving assault and multiple charges.

According to the Odessa Police Department, officers responded to a report of a robbery at a Walmart located on Northwest Loop 338. Store employees reported that a suspect attempted to leave without paying for several clothing items.

The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Frederick Demone Jones, was observed on surveillance cameras by loss prevention staff. When confronted, Jones allegedly shoved a female employee in the chest with his forearm, causing pain and allowing him to try to escape with the merchandise.

Officers later located Jones nearby. Police said he resisted arrest, resulting in a brief struggle before he was taken into custody.

During a search, officers reportedly found stolen clothing, a usable amount of suspected methamphetamine, and a firearm inside a bag he was carrying. Authorities also confirmed that Jones has a prior felony conviction for a drug-related offense in 2023.

After being read his Miranda rights, Jones waived them and admitted to the theft but denied assaulting the employee.

Based on evidence including witness statements and surveillance footage, Jones was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest.

He is currently being held at the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on a combined bond of $44,500.
