Serigne Fallou Niang, 18, from New York, was arrested in Irvine after allegedly stealing multiple iPhones from Apple Stores across Southern California.
According to the Irvine Police Department, officers were called to the Apple Store after loss prevention detained Niang for walking out with two display iPhones. During a search of his backpack, officers discovered seven additional stolen iPhones.
Niang faces multiple felony charges, including:
Second-degree burglary of a commercial establishment
Grand theft for property valued over $950
Receiving stolen property for the additional iPhones
Because Niang is 18 years old, he will be prosecuted as an adult. Potential penalties include 16 months to 3 years in state prison for each felony charge, fines up to $10,000 per count, and possible restitution to Apple for any unrecovered or damaged merchandise.
A conviction would result in a permanent criminal record, which could limit future employment, housing, and other opportunities. Judges may also impose probation in addition to or instead of jail time.
