NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. — One person was arrested Thursday following a stolen vehicle incident in New Westminster that ended in a crash and a brief foot chase, according to the New Westminster Police Department.
Police said officers responded shortly before 3:40 p.m. on Jan. 16 to a report of an unconscious person seated in the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle in the 500 block of Royal Avenue. Upon arrival, officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Surrey earlier that day and secured the area.
Before police were able to safely contain the scene, the driver reportedly regained consciousness and fled eastbound on Royal Avenue. Officers did not pursue the vehicle; however, a short time later it was involved in a crash near the intersection of Royal Avenue and 1st Street.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended nearby after a brief chase.
BC Emergency Health Services paramedics assessed both the driver and a passenger who were struck during the incident. As a precaution, both individuals were transported to hospital for further medical evaluation.
“This arrest was a true team effort,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver of the New Westminster Police Department. “Our patrol members did an excellent job, and we’re thankful for the assistance from our specialty units.”
Police also credited witnesses who came forward and helped officers locate the suspect. Investigators said the individual is known to police, and multiple charges are being recommended.
