In a major breakthrough, the Kandivali and Dahisar police have busted a gang of four involved in gold theft worth Rs47 lakh from two jewellery manufacturing units in the city. The accused, who were employed at the respective units, allegedly fled with the gold after months of planning.
Police have recovered gold worth Rs27 lakh, stolen over the past month. The two separate cases were reported in Dahisar and Kandivali, where the owners discovered missing gold stock and informed the authorities.
In the first case, Mehul Soni, owner of a jewellery unit in Dahisar, noticed a shortfall of 264 grams of gold while reconciling April’s production. SK Anisur Salem, a recently hired worker, became unreachable after May 9. Soni promptly filed a complaint, leading to Salem’s arrest on May 31. His associate, Somnath Gamu Hasda, was apprehended on June 3.
In the second incident, Ajanmian Nanu Gaji, owner of a jewellery factory in Kandivali’s Islam Compound, accused worker Razzak Hussain Malik of fleeing with three gold necklaces worth Rs23 lakh. Malik remains under investigation.
The cases highlight the growing concern of insider crimes in Mumbai’s jewellery industry. Police continue efforts to trace the remaining stolen gold and identify further accomplices.
