On Monday, police detained a 16-year-old youth in connection with the double murder that took place in Gomtinagar on the night of April 19. The victims, identified as Ram Saware and Mukesh Kumar Rawat (alias Nanhu), were allegedly killed following a violent altercation with the accused.

The case was initially brought to light when Vandana Kumari, the wife of Ram Saware, filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR. Following the investigation, on April 21, three individuals—Ramdev alias Mahadev, Shivraj alias Shiva, and Mohit Kumar—were arrested. Further probing led to the detention of the 16-year-old from a slum on April 28, who was taken into protective custody.

According to Pankaj Kumar Singh, ADCP of East Zone, preliminary investigations have suggested that the victims, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attempted to steal from the residence of the accused. In retaliation, the accused reportedly assaulted the two victims, smeared their bodies with black paint, and labeled them as ‘420’ (fraudsters). The victims, severely injured, were later abandoned near railway tracks in Viramkhand. They were rushed to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries shortly thereafter.

Police have stated that further investigation is underway to trace additional suspects involved in the crime.
