Zachary Shawn Simmons, a 26-year-old man from Madison, N.C., has been arrested and charged with Intentional Child Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury after an investigation into severe injuries sustained by an infant.

Simmons was taken into custody on January 29, 2025, following an investigation by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office. The charges stem from an incident in which an infant sustained injuries believed to be caused by violent shaking. Hospital staff at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital raised concerns of potential abuse, prompting the investigation.

Detectives from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with Rockingham County Child Protective Services, determined that the infant’s injuries were inflicted by repeated, violent shaking. This led to significant harm to the child. The investigation remains ongoing with continued support from the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office.

Simmons is currently being held without bond at the Rockingham County Detention Facility. As is customary, no identifying information about the minor victim has been released.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact Rockingham County Crime Stoppers at 336-349-9683. This case underscores the commitment of local authorities to protect vulnerable children and ensure that those responsible for harm are held accountable.
