COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – A man arrested in Collierville for retail theft has now been indicted in connection with a multi-state organized retail crime ring, according to the Collierville Police Department (CPD).
The investigation began in January when officers witnessed a theft in progress at HomeGoods on Houston Levee Road. The suspect, Zachary Deon Gaines, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended with the help of uniform patrol officers.
Gaines was initially charged with theft of property and evading arrest. However, further investigation uncovered evidence from his vehicle and criminal history linking him to multiple retail thefts across both the Memphis area and Atlanta, Georgia.
CPD detectives collaborated with Atlanta law enforcement, contributing information that led to broader charges. On Friday, officials in Atlanta announced that Gaines and others were formally indicted for their roles in an organized retail theft ring spanning multiple states.
“This case underscores the effectiveness of proactive policing and inter-agency collaboration in disrupting organized theft operations that impact communities across state lines,” said Collierville Police in a statement.
