A 35-year-old Revere man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly attempting to scam an Essex resident out of $15,000.
According to Essex police, a family member of the potential victim reported that the resident had been contacted online and by phone, and told they needed to pay $15,000 to fix a supposed computer virus. The resident was ready to pay the sum in cash before the family member intervened.
Police intercepted the alleged courier at the resident’s home. After confirming the man had no legitimate reason to be there, authorities arrested Yi Peng Lou, 35, and charged him with attempt to commit a crime (larceny over $1,200). Lou is scheduled to appear in Gloucester District Court on Thursday.
Essex police believe Lou was part of a larger group running this “well-known and common computer technical support scam.”
Police Chief Thomas Shamshak warned, “If we catch you trying to scam our residents, you will be arrested. These types of scams are increasingly common in Essex and across the Commonwealth, and I hope this arrest sends the message that we will not stand idly by and let our residents be victimized.”
The Essex Police Department reminded residents to be cautious of scammers claiming to be from known organizations, offering prizes, or demanding immediate payment. Officials advise avoiding links sent via email or text and instead contacting organizations through verified websites.
