ARLINGTON, Va. — Yesenia Amaya, a 33-year-old Maryland resident, has been arrested after allegedly embezzling approximately $26,000 raised on a GoFundMe campaign meant for her deceased relative’s funeral expenses.
According to Arlington County Police, Amaya created the fundraiser in September 2023 after learning about the death of a family member living in Arlington, Virginia. The campaign was intended to support the immediate family and cover funeral costs. However, police say Amaya withdrew the funds and used the money for unauthorized purposes.
Authorities issued warrants for Amaya in February 2024 but were unable to locate her until a recent tip from the community led to her detention by Landover Hills police in Maryland. She was subsequently extradited to Virginia to face charges.
Amaya is currently held without bond and faces multiple charges, including obtaining money by false pretenses, computer fraud, and embezzlement.
GoFundMe confirmed to 7News that they permanently banned Amaya’s account and worked to redirect the funds to the rightful family.
