DARIEN — A New York man connected to a multi-state theft ring has been arrested for a 2023 burglary at a Maple Street home where large amounts of cash were stolen from a safe, police said.
Yefersson Estiwar Camero-Alzate, 31, from Queens, New York, was charged last month in connection with the break-in on January 28, 2023, according to an arrest log from the Darien Police Department.
Police responded to the home after a burglary alarm went off and found a broken first-floor window. The homeowner reported that a safe containing a large sum of cash had been emptied.
“Surveillance footage captured two suspects entering the residence just before the alarm was triggered,” authorities said.
Investigators linked the incident to the South American Theft Group, a gang known for burglaries in Darien, Westport, Farmington, and other areas.
Darien police collaborated with Nassau County and Stamford departments to identify Camero-Alzate as one of three suspects involved in the Maple Street burglary. Surveillance footage showed Camero-Alzate at the Darien scene and other locations.
Nassau County authorities later apprehended Camero-Alzate and extradited him from Green Haven Correctional Facility in New York to Stamford Police Department.
On September 29, Darien officers formally charged Camero-Alzate with third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree larceny. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.
