The Punjab Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of Yasin Mohammed (22), a key operative in a cross-border drug smuggling syndicate, and recovered 7.1 kg of heroin from his possession.
Yasin, originally from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, was currently residing in Lalru village, Mohali, according to a statement by DGP Gaurav Yadav. He has a criminal background, with past cases under the Arms Act, NDPS Act, theft, and snatching.
The investigation revealed that Jagpreet Singh alias Jagga, based in Moga, was in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers. Jagga and Yasin, who were earlier lodged together in Ludhiana jail, allegedly ran the narcotics supply network within Punjab.
According to Commissioner of Police Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, drone-delivered heroin consignments were dropped in the Ajnala sector, and Yasin would retrieve them as per Jagga’s instructions.
Based on actionable intelligence, police teams arrested Yasin from Wadali in Chheharta, Amritsar, immediately after he retrieved the heroin. During interrogation, Yasin revealed that he would hand over the consignment to Jagga, who would then distribute it across the Malwa region of Punjab.
The Punjab Police have launched a thorough investigation to uncover the backward and forward linkages of the drug network, especially the cross-border connections with Pakistani smugglers.
