A 20-year-old man, Yaseen Mohammed Yunus Shaikh, has been arrested by the Central Crime Unit (CCU) of the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police for his involvement in a series of online money transfer scams. The accused is accused of cheating money transfer shop owners in the twin-city of Mira Bhayandar using a deceptive scheme.

Shaikh, a resident of Mira Road, would approach shop owners with requests to transfer money to various bank accounts in exchange for cash. Once the shop owners initiated the transfers, Shaikh would claim to have forgotten the cash, allegedly kept in the dickey of his scooter. He would then leave the shop under the pretext of retrieving the money, only to vanish without a trace.

The scam came to light after Shaikh cheated a shop owner in Kashigaon of Rs 15,000. As more complaints surfaced, the CCU launched a parallel investigation. Acting on a tip-off and surveillance, the police team led by Sub-Inspector Hitendra Vichare, under the guidance of Police Inspector Rahul Raakh, successfully trapped and arrested Shaikh from Beverly Park, Mira Road.

Investigations revealed that Shaikh was involved in at least four similar offences in Mira Road, Kashigaon, and Bhayandar, using the same modus operandi. As a result, a case under section 318(4) for cheating and deceit was registered at the Kashigaon police station, and Shaikh has been remanded to police custody.

The police are now looking into the bank accounts to which the defrauded amounts were transferred. Further investigations are ongoing.
