In a joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), two women from Bihar were arrested at Agartala Railway Station on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle 22.4 kg of dry cannabis to Punjab.
The seized contraband was packed in six packets and concealed inside two pit bags and a trolley bag. The arrested women, identified as Manju Devi (45) from Lakshmisharai district and Rachana Devi (36) from Bhagalpur district, were reportedly using trains from Agartala to transport narcotics on multiple occasions.
According to Tapas Das, officer-in-charge of GRP Agartala, preliminary investigations suggest the cannabis was intended for Punjab, where it could fetch nearly Rs 4.5 lakh in the black market. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Agartala GRP police station.
