Police have arrested a woman, Makwana, for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 10 lakh, including Rs 1 lakh in cash, from a baby shower at the Saurashtra Patel Samaj Vadi in Mini Bazaar.

According to the complainant, Ramesh Solanki, the theft occurred on Tuesday morning when his wife placed her purse containing jewellery and cash at the event. Makwana reportedly took the purse and returned to her home in Shyam Dham Society, approximately 7 km away.

Varachha Inspector R. B. Gojiya told TOI that after identifying Makwana in CCTV footage, authorities traced her through a network of 273 cameras. She was eventually located at her father’s residence, and the stolen valuables were recovered from her father-in-law.

Investigations revealed that Makwana lost her mother during the COVID pandemic and faced family issues with her father. She is married to a diamond artisan and resides with him. Police said she has a history of petty theft, including mobile phones, although no prior FIRs had been filed.

Varachha police are continuing the investigation to determine her exact motive, as Makwana is not cooperating.
