VICTOR, N.Y. — A routine shopping trip ended in an arrest after deputies say a woman allegedly walked out of a Target store without paying for merchandise.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Brittni Elyse Cortina, 39, was arrested on February 3 after investigators say she concealed multiple items inside the store. Deputies reported that Cortina allegedly concealed merchandise valued at $37.99 and passed all points of sale without rendering payment.

Cortina was taken into custody at the store and transported to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office substation. She was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the petit larceny charge in Victor Town Court at a later date.

Authorities remind shoppers that shoplifting is a criminal offense and may result in arrest and prosecution.
